Before mankind was able to fashion gloves that used all 10 digits, we wore mittens - and still do. A mitten is a type of glove in which the thumb has a separate sheath and the four fingers remain grouped together inside a single pocket. Some modern adaptations also include a separate index finger, enabling hands to perform functions such as rifle shooting and camera operation. More recently, convertible mittens allow the fingers pocket to be retracted whenever greater dexterity is needed.
