Thumbs up
Before mankind was able to fashion gloves that used all 10 digits, we wore mittens - and still do. A mitten is a type of glove in which the thumb has a separate sheath and the four fingers remain grouped together inside a single pocket. Some modern adaptations also include a separate index finger, enabling hands to perform functions such as rifle shooting and camera operation. More recently, convertible mittens allow the fingers pocket to be retracted whenever greater dexterity is needed.
Superior warmth
Mittens were once considered as cute little hand-warmers for young children, but history shows that mittens are more effective at keeping hands of all ages warm. Fingers kept together are able to maintain heat better than fingers separated from each other. Outdoorsmen and people who work outside in cold climates increasingly prefer the warmth and versatility of combination or convertible mittens.
Lots to choose from
Sheepskin, leather, wool, and fleece, as well as many new high-tech synthetics such as Dacron II, Kevlar, Thinsulate, and Goretex, combine exceptional warmth with durability.
Easy to make
Mittens are inexpensive to make and are very easy to sew. Patterns can be scaled for both adult- and children-sized hands. Sewing patterns and materials can be purchased at most fabric stores. In addition, knitting patterns are also a popular and easy way to pass the time while creating a gift that has your own special touch.
